Why I am a Dog Person

September 13, 2017

I am a dog person. These are my two dogs. One is a mixed-breed puppy, and the other an 8-year old Golden Retriever.

With the exception of maybe horses, I prefer dogs over any other animal on this earth. Dogs are generally good-natured, loving, and loyal to a fault. That is probably why they are referred to as “man’s best friend.”

Dogs have gotten a bad rap throughout history, dating back to biblical times. Dogs were thought to be unclean and the lowest of the low.

I am just not buying it! Many are hard workers, and often serve to rescue, herd, protect, entertain, and comfort. Mine are very intelligent and always glad to see me.

As a child, my family nurtured various pets - goats, bunnies, hamsters, ducks, and dogs. While we never had more than one dog at a time, I can't remember our house without a canine roaming about.

While cats are standoffish, temperamental, and wily, most dogs will love on just about anyone...with the exception of poorly trained, abused, or neglected canines.

I will say I am not really a fan of little, hyper, yappy dogs that demand attention all day long. I get enough of that from my teenagers. That being said, I will take them over a cat, bird, fish, hamster, bunny, goat, tiny pig, or exotic animal any day!

Some pure breeds are also kind of quirky, but that is why certain types of people love them. They say dogs tend to mirror their owners - either in temperament or features....literally:  some dogs look like their "parents."

For us:  The Golden Retriever....loyal, lovable, smart, friendly, and loud when necessary; and the mixed breed: strong, independent, lovable, and just quirky enough!

Once a dog girl, always a dog girl!
